According to Kabbalistic literature, the concept of "Ayn Sof" (without end) embodies the ultimate source of all reality. In this ketubah, two central blossoms, representing the Sefirot of Tiferet and Malkhut, are floating in a current with no visible beginning or end. The union of these spiritual principles represents the eternal dialectic between male and female. In a sacred marriage bond every proper deed contributes to well-being and harmony and leads to understanding divine essence. Ayn Sof is a limited edition giclee reproduction of 600. It was released in 2006.
This playful ketubah composition portrays the flourishing of two trees that grow to full potential when planted in fertile ground beside nourishing streams of water. In a marriage covenant the energy of abiding love provides the sustaining force which enables each individual and the marriage union to grow with joy and bear fruit. Blessed by the ancient language of our sages, this celebratory design sparkles with earthly wisdom. This limited edition giclee was released in 2003 with a run of 600. The design for this ketubah uses the letterforms of "Chet" and "Yud" to frame the enclosure for the ketubah vows. The letter Chet teaches us that "life" contains Divine Essence in our daily reality. Transcendence and abundant renewal are reflected in the canopy. Yud symbolizes spirituality and understanding. It represents the active force when bride and groom take responsibility for their actions and covenant. The themes which develop in this work are tenderness, commitment, and strength. The "Double Ring" design is an ageless and universally cherished symbol of two lives joined into one in love and marriage. Illuminated in the completely unique signature style of 20th Century Illuminations this contemporary rendering of the double ring design shines in its timeless accounting of the nature of a union bound in love. Celebrating 2500 years of ketubah illumination Amy Fagin's contemporary line of fine art ketubot delight couples around the world with finely crafted illuminations that speak to the heart and soul of love and marriage. This ketubah was released in 2009 with a run of 750. Arabesque vines and a vibrant rainbow cascade of flowers create a dual spiral arrangement with a Mogen David center point. “Duet of the Beloveds” was originally created in 1995 and featured in Anita Diamant’s The New Jewish Wedding. We have updated this beloved ketubah design due to popular request. The exhuberant composition evokes the cosmic forces of the universe in an uncomplicated manner, encompassing both great and small. The spirit of a dancing couple embracing the full course of life’s current is joyfully conveyed. The moment of embrace between lovers is perhaps the most intoxicating and mysterious force within the realm of human experience. Two individuals encircle and envelop one another dissolving their apparent separateness. In the physical embrace of love, our consciousness expands and we glimpse the enormity of the cosmic and earthly forces that we are made and shaped by.
With “Embrace”, this moment is described in word, symbol, shape, pattern and color. Two join together in honoring the traditions of marriage and Jewish heritage. They widen their embrace, transcend individual experience. They unite with all humanity in the spirit of love and understanding. This completion is reflected in the blessing from Bereshit 2:1 “Thus heaven and earth were finished, and all their array”. The fiery and flowing hexagram of "Evening Star" blends proud symbols of Jewish identity with the wondrous and infinite order of the universe. The appearance of a bright star in the heavens foretells of an upcoming event filled with blessing and promise. The symbolism of "Evening Star" is offered as a blessing of goodwill from the artist to the betrothed, family and friends. In the course of its trajectory as a contemplative art object in the home, "Evening Star"s message of promise and hope for peace transcends the individual and the moment, encompassing all humanity for all time. A marriage covenant in the span of an adult life encompasses a commitment which embraces the joy of the wedding day and the promise to offer forbearance in times of difficulty. The balanced and kinetic composition of “Hand in Hand” emphasizes the creative potential of two individuals as they form one partnership. The tandem touching Hamsas convey the notion of an enduring promise between beloveds with an emphasis on openness, honesty and loving care. The uniqueness of the individual in relation to Jewish heritage as it is expressed today is dynamically rendered in this contemporary ketubah illumination. This exuberant spiral composition captures the essence of desire as it manifests in a love relationship. Desire is central to human emotion and is responsible for our greatest achievements as well as our darkest atrocities. All unformed ideas become reality as desire is harnessed and transformed into action. The Mogen David jewel calls upon us to keep central the tenants of Judaism. From this center vivid pattern and color emerge in joyous vitality, symbolizing the kinetics of desire, with our promises of love and kindness. This smart and contemporary illumination speaks to the heart of love and marriage. An airy and organic intertwined double scroll forms a locking heart with two brilliantly colored and intricate patterned forms. This composition has an effortless flow which evokes pleasure, intimacy and the serendipitous nature of love The Passage ketubah strikes the viewer with its regality and composure. It is a design honoring the majesty of the wedding ritual and the important life transition for bride and groom, their families and friends. The lavender band suggest the tallis or chuppah, a holy covering for their ceremonial vows. The pillars are a traditional symbol of support and knowledge, and seated at the foot of them are the lions of Judea, the guardians of Jewish faith. A sense of mystery and thoughtful reflection develop within this work. Meditation is at the heart of this illuminated manuscript. The symbol of a fully opened blossom represents the pure and radiant life force deep within. Intricate detail in text, colour and pattern reveal the essence of 'sacred text' emerging from the very nexus of the open blossom. The mysterious and holy origins embodied within the Jewish marriage ritual unfold from this vibrant composition. The unearthly beauty of stained glass lies in its ability to yield colored light. The depths of colour captivate the mind with their luminescent intensity. Stained glass is a surface to look both "through" and "at," bringing a paradoxical dimension to each panel; we can, in a sense, see through to another world. This ketubah is a clever and succinct rendition of an unrolling scroll. It was inspired by the beautiful K'riat Sh'ma, where we re-affirm our commitment to Jewish ritual by inscribing the Lord's commanded words upon the door posts of our homes and gates. The angular position of the main text encourages the viewer to consider past, present and future. The scroll unwinds to read the written covenant between bride and groom; the prayer reads:
"And you shall lay these words upon your heart and upon your soul." Celestial energy emanates from this illumination. The delicate rendering of the zenith phase of the moon is embedded in the language of the marriage covenant. As the lunar cycle influences the rhythms of our very lives so the Jewish calendar honors the natural order of our common human experience. Marriage, in this context, represents the hub of our daily efforts. The multifaceted star composition creates the notion that our existence embraces many dimensions, all of which interact and influence our everyday experience. The essence of this ketubah is beautifully expressed in Psalm 89:38
"It shall be established for ever like the moon, and the witness in the sky is sure."
The Hebrew word "Tzafiyah" translates as "observation." In Sefer Yetzirah, "Tzafiyah" refers to a heightened state of awareness leading to enlightenment. Within the context of marriage, the art of living in a fulfilling partnership incorporates a willingness to observe habits and patterns that restrict our behaviors. This Ketubah reminds us to practice simple observation of our actions. This heightening of awareness vitalizes the day to day familiarity of a lifetime partnership. Heritage:
The exotic spice coast of Cochin India is the inspiration for the second of our Heritage Ketubah illuminations. For at least 2000 years evidence of a Jewish presence in southwest costal India has been documented. by the 15th century, Cochin had grown a vibrant Jewish community which flourished in the spice and agricultural trades of the era. Under the richly colored chuppah blowing in the scented breezes of the Indian spice coast, these delicately lettered ketubah vows offer beckoning promise to a marriage union blessed with love kindness and devotion. Witnessed, symbolically, by family, friends and longstanding heritage of the Jewish communities around the world, "Kochi!" radiates a joyous blessing for todays couples from the ages of Jewish heritage in the sub Indian continent.
My exploration of the East European immigrants experience in Mexico City began in a conversation with author Ilan Stavans. This lively encounter inspired my visit to the “Centro Historico” where another unique encounter, this time with Monica Unikel, transported me to the days when the first Jewish immigrants arrived in the city. Monica’s Jewish heritage, Mexican birthright and background in history combined into a unique career as tour guide with a concentration Mexico’s Jewish past. The kaleidoscopic sights and sounds of modern metropolis Mexico City is grounded in the archaeological remnants of the Aztec empire, historic structures of the Spanish conquistadors and in the faces of modern Mexican citizens.
Blossoming Jacaranda trees lined the streets of the city upon landing. The spiked light violet flowers of these lovely ornamental shade trees defined my first impressions. The third illumination from our “Heritage Ketubah” collection, “Sweet Shelter” honors the Jewish community of Sarajevo, Bosnia, Herzegovina. This composition is based on the artist’s interpretation of an embroidered wall hanging from a Jewish home dating from 19th century Sarajevo. The original embroidery is on display at the Orthodox Synagogue / Museum of historic old town Sarajevo. This romantic composition draws the viewer back in time to when the Jewish community found shelter from the expulsion of 1492. This inspired design evokes romance, reflections of joy, celebration and the “sweet shelter” or marriage for generations to come! The first of our "Heritage Ketubah" series "Venetian Romance" transports the betrothed to the romantic canals and streets of Venice Italy. The composition of this regal and buoyant design is inspired by the famous arches of San Marco Piazza. Exquisitely rendered low relief carved ornament, Sienna and Rhodochrosite marble, honor the inspired history of Jewish Italian synagogue art and architecture. The central stained glass panel frieze reflects images of an abundant flowing stream and a majestic barren desert landscape.
All "Heritage Ketubah" designs include a written historical highlight about the Jewish community honored by this ketubah. We hope this effort broadens and enlivens our understanding of the vast legacy of Jewish art and culture throughout history.
